Texas Leads the Nation in Highway Fatalities
AUSTIN, Texas — In 2015, more people died on Texas roads than in any other state and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that number is on the rise for the fifth year in a row. Over 3,000 highway crashes in Texas were fatal last year, and 175,000 caused serious injury. The Insurance Council of Texas says newcomers unfamiliar with state highways and speed limits may have something to do with that. But, the best thing to do is drive defensively.
“Texas has more traffic on our roadways. We’ve got lower gasoline prices, people continue to use alcohol, distracted driving is playing a major factor, all those contribute to a record rise and a record number,” said Mark Hanna, Insurance Council of Texas. Statistics show Texas also leads the country in alcohol-impaired driving fatalities with California coming in a distant second.
